Black and silver finishes
The highest scoring images in the benchmark were dominated by black and silver products. Conversely, many of the lower scoring hero images were colorful coffee makers or included colorful mugs being used in the machine.
Pairing coffee and pastries
A small portion of the hero images included accessories or other elements in the visual. Of those that did, the most engaging featured croissants and some form of coffee in the background.
Empty carafes
Brands were split on whether or not to show freshly brewed coffee in mugs or carafes, but the products that kept the coffee pots empty tended to earn higher Vizit scores. Including steaming coffee cups being filled performed similarly poorly.
Top Carousel Image Trends
Coffee in travel mugs
Carousel imagery featuring brewed coffee in travel mugs performed well. Some of these visuals included models, usually with part of their face cropped, carrying their coffee while on the go.
Fingers pressing buttons
Visuals of people using the coffee makers were largely limited to hands pressing buttons on the machines. Among the highest scoring images, hands were most likely to be extending into the image from the bottom half of the frame, and many were cropped at the wrist.
Feature-focused copy on white backgrounds
High-scoring images in the category benchmark include many visuals with copy touting the features of the product on a white background. Placement of the text varied, but the black and white color scheme was relatively consistent across appealing images.

Vizit scores visual content for effectiveness with consumer audiences. Each image receives a score from 0-100 that predicts its level of effectiveness with the specified audience. Product detail page (PDP) or listing-level scores are driven by an aggregate score of the product hero or primary imagery, carousel or secondary imagery, volume of content, and sequencing of content. Content Effectiveness Rankings scores may aggregate several brand PDPs depending on retailer search and best seller lists, which fluctuate often. Higher-scoring images and PDPs are more effective and appealing to online shopper audiences.
